Taveners Pontefract Cakes

Pontefract Cake is a traditional British sweet made from pure liquorice, lightly flavoured with aniseed for an extra aromatic kick. These small, flat, round cakes have a soft, chewy texture and a deep, distinctive liquorice taste that has been enjoyed for generations. Named after the town of Pontefract in Yorkshire, famous for its liquorice production.

Originally, the cakes were made by pressing pure liquorice into molds, often with a hint of aniseed to enhance the flavour. They became especially popular in Victorian Britain, prized for both their taste and perceived medicinal benefits, including soothing sore throats.
