Legend has it that a young employee — often said to be Thomas John Dobson — accidentally slipped while carrying trays of different sweets, sending them tumbling together. Rather than face the consequences, he cleverly gathered the jumbled pieces and sold them as a brand-new, charming assortment… and a classic sweet shop mix was born.
Historically, in the early 1800s, street vendors in industrial Yorkshire towns would buy “ends” or “seconds” — broken pieces and odd shapes — directly from confectionery factories. These mixed sweets were then sold cheaply to factory workers, making them an affordable and much-loved treat. A practical beginning that turned into a timeless British tradition.
